Sitoy shifts to using ‘positive’ stickers to fight cyberporn

Cebu Provincial Board Member Arleigh Sitoy has revised  his plan to use “shame” signs against   suspected operators of  cyberpornography in his hometown  of Cordova.

Instead he said he’s printing  8,000 stickers with the wholesome message: “No to cybersex” and  “God bless this home.”

He said he would go house to house, and ask families to post the stickers accompanied by an image of a crucifix.

“I’ll ask permission from the family to post the sticker since they are not participating in cybersex. If the house does not have a sticker then you’ll start doubting,” he said.

The stickers will be ready for distribution in two weeks, he said, and his father Cordova Mayor Adelino Sitoy has given the go-signal.

He said this approach uses  “reverse psychology” and  touches the   “conscience of those involved in cybersex.”

If that doesn’t work, Sitoy  repeated his threat to resort to withcraft (“barang”)  and put a curse of death on those involved in cybersex.

“We would be suspicious about those who won’t allow us to post the stickers,” added Sitoy, a former Cordova mayor.

He said he changed tactics after Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale and other quarters expressed apprehension that a “shame campaign” would invite opposition, not to mention the court ruling on  a similar campaign  in Manila in the 1990s by then Mayor Mayor Alfredo Lim, whose use of spray painting of houses of suspected drug dealers, was struck down as unconstitutional by the Court of Appeals.

“I did not ask permission (from the vice governor) because this  activity is in Cordova.  This is our concern although of course, we listened to the vice governor.  That is why I reversed by approach.  It is effective because you can get the pulse of the problem,” said Sitoy.

He said that after he goes around offering stickers to be posted in households, he  would chat with members of the community and get  tips from the townfolk about which families are suspected of being involved in the illegal activity.  His visits would not be limited to  barangay Ibabao, where  several raids were held.
