Dalaguete, Cebu–Drawing inspiration from his hard-working parents, Manuel Alonso has proven that determination and hard work are indeed keys to success.
Behind these two, this 59-year-old farmer from Barangay Salug, a mountain Barangay in Dalaguete town, south of Cebu, was able to provide the needs of his family through crop and livestock farming.
“Sinunod ni nako sa akong mga ginikanan. Sukad pagkagagmay pa namo, naa nani among pilapilan. Pagkaminyo nako, mao pud ni usa sa among panginabuhian,” Manuel told CDN Digital.
“13 pa akong edad, nanguma nako są among kahomayan. Igo-igo ra man ko nakahoman og elementary,” he added.
Manuel wanted to give his children the education he was not able to attain for himself, so he and his wife worked hard to provide for their education.
And the hard work paid off.
His eldest finished a degree in teaching and the second one finished with a degree in criminology. His youngest child is currently attending senior high school.
“Kung mahoman og tanom sa homay, magkalingaw pud mi og tanom og utanon. Duna pud mi hayopan. Kalabaw, kabayo, baka. Ang mga bata, pag-eskwela ana nila, mabaligya ko og hayopan aron ibayad sa eskwelahan,” Manuel said.
“Di ra mi mamaligya og homay, kunsomohon lang namo. Di lang namo ibaligya kay dako man pud og ikatabang kung kunsomohon. Sud-an nalang among paliton,”
“Ang mga utanon, di man ingon nga kasaligan. Kay bisag maayo og tubo imong mga utanon, unya pud og barato ang presyo, alkansi ka gyod, gamay ra ka’g mahimo,” he said.
Manuel, like many other fathers who work very hard to sustain the needs of their family, is truly a hero and model to his own children.
