COACHES and officials of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) will be undergoing a whole-day seminar on first aid and emergency procedures handled by rehabilitation medicine specialist Dr. Rhoel Dejano and Basic Life Support (BLS) expert John Paul Gallardo on July 25 at the Cebu Coliseum conference room.
According to Dejano, he has tapped Gallardo, whom he has worked with in training the Malaysian national basketball squad, to speak about BLS.
“He is BLS-certified by the American Heart Association. It will be a whole-day lecture, which will also have a demonstration using cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) mannequins. The participants will also get to perform CPR on these mannequins. At the end of the day, we will also have an examination,” divulged Dejano to Cebu Daily News on Wednesday.
Dejano, one of Cebu’s finest sports medicine practitioner who has had extensive training at the IMG Sports Academy in Florida, will also be lecturing on the “collapsed athlete.”
With the league opening its 15th season on Aug. 1, the Cesafi is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to make sure that athletes have a clean bill of health before they compete.
It is in that regard that athletes must submit a medical certificate and an electrocardiogram certificate before they are allowed to play.
The measures are being taken in the wake of the unfortunate death of Jose Rizal University high school player Carl Jimwell “CJ” Servillon, who collapsed during a game in the preseason and expired two days after.
