DepEd Cebu waiting on LGUs to declare suspension of classes
The Department of Education (DepEd) in Cebu is waiting on local governments to give the go signal to suspend classes in preparation for tropical storm Butchoy.
“In case there’s no typhoon signal but the situation in the locality is unfavorable, the mayor or governor may suspend classes being the head of the disaster risk reduction management council,” said Dr. Bianito Dagatan, Cebu City DepEd superintendent.
The principal may suspend classes if necessary after they assess the condition in their area provided in coordination with the local government unit.
“Likewise, the parents have the ultimate responsibility to decide whether to send their children to school or not when there is bad weather,” he said.
Dagatan said there is already a standard procedure when a storm signal is also raised by the weather bureau. Signal number one means no classes for kindergarten schools.
Signal number 2 means no classes for kindergarten to elementary while classes on all levels are suspended if the storm signal is raised to number 3. “Butchoy” is expected to enter the country Tuesday evening.
