Ababon helps team win Mayor’s Cup crown; RCR takes third

Vescon Construction got big shots from their big time players to fend off the gutsy ASPA Formworks, 94-85, and hoist the championship in the 2017 Cebu City Mayor’s Cup Commercial Basketball Tournament last night at the Cebu City Sports Institute.

Tied for the last time at 80-all after the two teams went back-and-forth for the first 35 minutes, former University of the Visayas (UV) standout Mark Ababon canned a triple from the corner to shatter the deadlock and placed Vescon in the driver’s seat for good.

Ronan Isidro then made a baseline jumper and a putback and Ababon put the finishing touches with yet another triple from the very same corner to put the win in Vescon’s bag as they led, 90-81, with just 1:34 remaining in the match.

Ababon was named the tournament MVP as he finished with 23 points. Mark Abadia added 20, Isidro chipped in 17 while Nat Cruz notched 11.

ASPA put up a solid fight as they quickened the pace, which resulted in open triples for sharpshooter Romar Ponce, to give them a 44-36 lead. Harold Cincoflores orchestrated a terrific second period surge to close the gap at 47-50, at halftime.

Vescon eventually took the lead late in the third, 69-67 as Cruz completed an and-one and Frank Nailon nailed a putback.

Frangiel Omolon, another product of UV, led ASPA with 21 points.

In the battle-for-third game, RCR Builders battled back from a 10-point deficit and dominated in overtime to prevail over LM Paragsa, 92-89.

Jestoni Casquejo and Ervin Badrina each had 16 to pace RCR.
