THE 2010 Pioneers and the 2015 Assassins authored huge upsets in Division 3 of the University of San Carlos North Alumni Basketball Conference (NABC) Summer League 2 Powered by Common Ground last weekend at the USC North Campus gym.

The Pioneers handed the 2008 Flyboys their first defeat of the tournament, 95-88, while the Assassins also did the same with the 2007 Waybus, 65-43.

Mike Rita had a monster outing as he flirted with a triple-double, with 31 points, eight rebounds, nine assists and a steal. Cheeno Dalangpan backed him with 25 points, four boards and three assists while Sherwin Co was just as potent with 18 markers, nine boards and six assists.

The win was 2010’s second in five games while 2008 dropped to 3-1 (win-loss), in spite of the tremendous efforts of Miko Santos (30 points) and Nico Magat (22 points, 20 rebounds, eight assists).

On the other hand, the Assassins got across-the-board numbers from Emmanuel Bautista, who had 14 points, eight rebounds, nine dimes and five steals for their fourth win in five tries, and into a tie with the Waybus, which beat the Pioneers earlier in the weekend, 59-50, thanks to Yoram Canama’s 27 points and 11 rebounds.

In other games, the 2004 Rebels got their first win of the competition, 47-29, over the 2003 Stallions.
