Like mother, like daughter. Merinisa J. Olvido, a classroom teacher at the Mayor AS Fortuna Memorial  Elementary School in Mandaue City was the “proudest mother” around when her daughter, Michelle, placed third in the 2009 Licensure Examination for Teachers.

Fast forward to 2014, the shoe was on the other foot as Michelle became the “proudest daughter” after her mother became the highest-ranked examinee in Central Visayas and the 5th overall in the National Qualifying Examination for School Heads (NQUESH).

Merinisa will today  leave the Mayor AS Fortuna Memorial Elementary School to take on bigger responsibilities as principal of Pagsabungan Elementary School.

Teaching was not Merinisa’s first passion. She graduated cum laude from the University of the Visayas in 1984 with a degree in Accounting. She then worked in the accounting department of the Cebu Normal University (CNU).

Late vocation
She remembers that her career took a twist in 2000, when she realized that she wanted to become a teacher.

“When my children were in college, I thought I wanted to be a teacher so that I could teach them well,” she told Cebu Daily News.

She took  the Certificate of Proficiency in Education in CNU and passed.

The rest — as the cliche goes — is history.
