With the active participation of two witnesses, police identified two ‘persons of interest’ in the killing of florist Daniel “Jun” Cañete who was stabbed to death inside his shop in barangay Day-as, Cebu City last Monday morning.

Two witnesses identified two men who were last seen with Cañete and police will invite these men for questioning, said Supt. Romeo Santander, chief of the City Intelligence Branch.

Chief Inspector David Señor of the Theft and Robbery Section, said that the missing P250,000 cash and some items would point to robbery as initial angle in the investigation.

Cañete, a native of Pagadian City, had two sons and was separated.

His excellent skills in flower arrangement was what made him known and he was sought after for weddings and other special occasions.

He was the ninth of 12 children and his family and friends were saddened by his death.

Mateo, the brother closest to him, said he felt all his senses went numb upon hearing of his death.

“Di ko katuo pagkahibaw nako, bag-o pa gali mi nagka-istoryahanay semana na ang nakalabay,” said Mateo. (I couldn’t believe the news, we just talked over the weekend.)

Mateo said he would miss Jun’s smiles and expressions of gratitude every time they meet. It was Mateo who lent money for Jun to start his flower business.

“Kanang kada kita namo, magpasalamat gyud na siya,” Mateo said. (He always thanked me whenever we see each other.)

Mateo had invited Jun to their barangay fiesta but Jun begged off, wanting to rest after a series of weddings that he had to attend to. Mateo felt during their last conversation that Jun was keeping a problem.

Stephen, Jun’s youngest son, said they have yet to decide on the schedule of burial because they are still waiting for some relatives.
