Cebu’s retail,  real estate growth attracts  fresh graduates

Cebu’s rapidly growing retail and real estate industries on the back of a vibrant business process outsourcing (BPO) sector are fueling demand for sales personnel in the supervisory and managerial levels, data from online job portal Jobstreet.com showed.

For fresh graduates and junior executives, the most in-demand jobs from January to March this year were in customer service and information technology (IT). Customer service also ranked among the top five most in-demand jobs in all levels.

Yolanda R. Buyco, Jobstreet Philippines marketing director, said in a media briefing Wednesday that there was a high demand for jobs in Cebu’s growth sectors based on the jobs posted on Jobstreet in the first quarter.

She noted that a lot of retail shops and real estate sales offices have opened in Cebu and required managers to oversee operations. There was a high demand for store managers, area sales managers, branch managers and channel sales managers.

“In these levels, you also see demand for marketing and business development professionals as well as engineers for construction fueled by the many real estate projects also sprouting in Cebu,” Buyco added.

Other supervisory jobs with a high demand were related to human resources, customer service, engineering and finance.

For managers, there was also a high demand for marketing and business development jobs, customer service, engineering and restaurant services.

For fresh graduates, Jobstreet data showed that the most in-demand jobs in the first quarter were related to customer service like receptionists, customer service representatives, and store cashiers.

Sales representatives for retail, logistics coordinator and merchandisers are the second most in-demand jobs for fresh graduates. Demand for sales personnel is expected to further increase, Buyco said.

Other in-demand jobs for fresh graduates were related to finance or accounting, clerical and administrative support and healthcare, including nurses and medical assistants.

Among junior executives, demand was highest for net developers, application developers and programmers. Other specializations with a high demand were in finance, customer service, sales and marketing/business development.

Earlier, online property portal Lamudi.com.ph cited Colliers International data showing that the real estate industry in Cebu is expected to continue to expand.

Jacqueline van den Ende, Lamudi.com.ph managing director, said office stock grew by 16.5 percent annually over the last seven years with 287,000 square meters yet to be delivered over the next three years.

Sales last year for residential properties also registered growth of 8 percent with many new products also launched last year or 19 percent more than in 2013.

Retail spaces will continue to grow with 407,000 square meters space expected to be available in the next three years.
