A ROOKIE policeman died when his firearm accidentally went off while he tried to clean it at his home in sitio Lower Paradise, Kinasang-an, Cebu City.

P01 Benjamin Pardillada, a 24-year-old member of the Sibonga-based Regional Public Safety Battalion, failed to make it after being rushed to the Cebu City Medical Center.

SP04 Rene Barral of the Pardo police precinct cited witnesses who claimed that Paradilla was cleaning his 9mm pistol at the pathway near his home when it went off at 3:30 am last Sunday.

The bullet hit his stomach and exited his back, Barral said. Barral said the responding policemen recovered from the scene the 9mm pistol with four bullets
and one empty shell.

The gun was turned over to the PNP Crime Laboratory for examination to verify if there was any foul play involved in the incident.
