Mandaue council tackles unfinished infra projects

MANDAUE City Planning and Development officer Marlo Ocleasa presented during the 7th regular session of the city council on Wednesday the list of the road and drainage projects of the Department of Public Woks and Highways and the city government.

The CPDO has recorded 27 ongoing projects that are funded by DPWH and another 15 ongoing projects funded by the city.

Majority of these projects involving road repairs, however, did not meet the target deadline after being suspended.

The council expressed dismay over the failure of both the DPWH and the contractors to stick to the original deadline indicated in the contract.

Councilor Nilo Seno, chairman of the committee on laws and ordinances, questioned the status of the overdue projects, which he said are causing traffic congestion in the city.

Ocleasa said that the status of overdue projects will be part of their monthly coordination meeting which started last July 25.

“July 25, that was our first meeting, unya ila na gipakita ang (and they already presented the) data pero (but) they were not able to give the details why naay (there is) suspension or delay,” Ocleasa explained.

The council also emphasized during the session the lack of monitoring on DPWH projects.

The records also showed that some of the projects in the city were suspended, especially road widening and road concreting, because they have to secure the consent of lot owners.

Engr. Raymund Catuna, project engineer of DPWH-7, said that contractors are obliged to work 24/7.

“But then in cities like Mandaue, major works will be done in the evening. The working time of our contractor is very limited due to traffic. That is one of the reasons why there are delays,” Catuna told the council.
