WITH the absence of 17-time secondary division champions University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, the upcoming 21st Milo Little Olympics Visayas Regional Finals is shaping up to be a wide-open race, according to organizer Ricky Ballesteros.

Ballesteros said UC’s absence will be felt, but the level of excitement will remain high.

UC recently announced it will skip commercial meets like the Milo Little Olympics and will focus on Department of Education-backed competitions due to financial constraints as a result of the implementation of the K-12 program.

“It’s (UC’s absence) going to affect the competition, but the excitement is still there considering that the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu will prove it can really defend its title in the secondary division that they won last year in Iloilo City by dethroning University of San Carlos-Basic Education (USC-BEd). Aside from USC-BEd and SHS-AdC, other schools and visiting teams are also expected to give their best,” Ballesteros said.

SHS-AdC dethroned USC-BEd in the secondary division last year with 130 points against the latter’s 107 points. USJ-R was at third with 107 points followed by Central Philippines University (CPU) of Iloilo City with 65 points.

USC-BEd retained its title in the elementary division with 72 points while SHS-AdC was just two points behind.

The the three-day meet, featuring 15 sporting events, will be held on September 8 to 11 in Cebu City.

Ballesteros, who is also the Visayas delegation head, said Bayawan City Elementary and High School delegation will be one of the teams to watch out for.

“Bayawan City has competed with Cebuano athletes before and have showed (sic) its potential. So it’s exciting to see them again in action. They are very good in volleyball, softball and athletics that’s why they are considered a threat to everyone in the competition,” said Ballesteros.

Aside from Bayawan City, schools from like Bacolod, Bohol, Leyte, Roxas, Aklan and Antique are also set to compete.
