Book about Martial Law launched in Cebu

At least 300 millennials attended on Friday the launching of a book that told about the atrocities committed during the 20-year iron-fist rule of the late Dictator Ferdinand Marcos, at the time when they were not born.
They were students of the University of the Philippines Cebu, University of San Jose – Recoletos (USJ-R), and the University of San Carlos (USC) who showed up at the UP Performance Arts Hall in Barangay Lahug for the Visayas-leg of the launching of The O Susana: Untold Stories of Martial Law in Davao, past 1:30 p.m.
Dr. Rhodora Bucoy, UP Cebu social science professor, said the millennials were encouraged to read the book to learn about the horrors of Martial Law.
“With the presence of historical revisionism nowadays, it is important for the youth to learn and promote critical thinking,” she said.
The book is a compilation of 45 accounts and articles of 35 writers from the Visayas and Mindanao about the horrors of Martial Law which was imposed by Marcos on Sept. 21, 1971.
The book, which edited by Macario Tiu of Ateneo de Davao University, was first launched in Quezon City last August.
Tiu said that in their pilot launching, all 1,000 copies were sold out.
On Friday, the members and faculty advisers of UP Cebu Political Science Society organized the Visayas-leg of the book launching.
Orlando Carvajal, SunStar Cebu columnist and one of the book’s contributors, said they were able to secure the endorsements from the Department of Education (DepEd) and Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to have O Susana as source materials in schools.
