As part of their thrust to eliminate illiteracy in the countryside, the Asian Carriers Conference Inc. donated laptops and tablets to four public schools in Cebu.

The devices will be used as complementary learning materials for the students.

A total of 160 gadgets were donated during the conference’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) project dubbed as “Daogmaon: Winning Children’s Future Against Illiteracy.”
It was also the concluding program of the four-day Asian Carriers Conference which started last September 6.

Twenty pre-loved laptops from Huawei Technologies Philippines Inc. and 20 tablets and six-month free Internet connectivity courtesy of PLDT were donated to Carmen National High School, Cordova National High School, Babag II High School and Argao National High School.

During the turnover ceremony held last Friday at the Shangri-la’s Mactan Resort & Spa, PLDT Global Corp. president and chief executive officer Alejandro “Alex” Caeg said that this move is an attempt to facilitate learning and knowledge among the underprivileged students in Cebu so they can become more academically competitive.

“The benefits of digitalization can be felt mostly by the younger generation. Hopefully, these donations will connect Cebuano students to the world as well,” he said.

The schools were pre-selected by PLDT and were assessed according to the school’s student population, location, and capacity to provide services for its students.

During her acceptance speech, Carmen National High School principal Fedellina Entero expressed her gratitude in behalf of the school for the act of charity shown by the donors.

“This will surely benefit our students and will prove very useful in developing their collaborative, critical thinking, and creative skills while fostering independent learning,” she said.

Due to the school’s huge student population which made the school divide class schedules between day and night, PLDT also donated a mobile van to Carmen National High School that can cater to a larger class size.

Aside from education, ACC’s annual CSR project aims to contribute to agriculture, fishing and transportation.
