Jose Santino Bunachita came crashing to the ground after completing a lung-busting challenge. A few minutes later, Rabboni Borbon threw up.

It was a lung-busting competition that pushed the participants to the limit but the Cebu Daily News’ (CDN) Siloys, composed of Bunachita, Borbon, Nestle Semilla, Victor Anthony Silva and Calvin Cordova, could not be denied as they were crowned champions in yesterday’s 2016 Press Freedom Week Metafit Eco-Challenge held at the grounds of Cebu Business Park.

It was the second straight year that CDN won the contest, accumulating 220 points to edge out GMA-7 and The Freeman, which both finished with 200 points.
The tie was broken through the “total time.”

GMA-7 came away with the first runner-up honors after completing the five challenges in 20 minutes. The Freeman timed 25 minutes to settle for second runner-up.

Sun.Star Cebu wound up third runner-up.

The competition, which was spearheaded by Cebu Holdings Inc. and supervised by fitness trainer Alan Choachuy of Coach-A Metafit Fitness Boot Camp, was part of the week-long celebration of this year’s Press Freedom Week.

The event was also supported by YKK Bikes, Jamis Bicycles and Cycle Ops.

The competition featured five challenges namely: Stretcher Run, Waste Segregation, Bamboo Shelter, Walk and Bike and Question Answer.

In Stretcher Run, each team was made to run from point A to point B carrying a stretcher loaded with 50-kilo dummy. CDN was first to finish the challenge.

In the Waste Segregation event, each team member ran to point A, grabbed a trash and ran back to the starting line and put the trash in the proper waste segregation (recyclable, residual, biodegradable). There were 19 trashes and each member was only allowed to grab one. The task was completed after the trashes were put in their proper places.

Another challenge had the competing teams assembling a bamboo shelter.

In the Question and Answer contest, each team was asked to answer questions inside an assigned cubicle on a balance board. Each wrong answer had a corresponding penalty. The team with the most number of correct answers won the contest.

In the Walk and Bike challenge, each member had to bring “pedestrian blocks” from point A to point B. The members were standing on the blocks and had to move them individually. After bringing all the blocks to point B, each member had to run to a stationary bike and pedal for 500 meters. First team to finish 2,500 meters won the challenge.

It was in that challenge that Bunachita sustained bruises. He had just alighted from the stationary bike and was about to run back to point B when he stumbled to the ground.

Still gasping for air after the challenge, Bunachita once again slumped to the ground after suffering cramps in both legs. He was attended to by paramedics from the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation.
Fun run

Before the Metafit Eco-Challenge, a fun run was held that saw CDN’s Venus Benting winning the five-kilometer men’s category with a time of 18 minutes and 37 seconds.

Sun.Star’s Hanz Llerin snatched her fifth straight win in the women’s 5k race at 29:51.

In the 3k race, The Freeman’s Julius Panerio dominated the men’s side. He was followed by co-worker Andres Lanchinebre (14:09) and Sun.Star’s Robert Conrad Aniñon (14:29). Pia Noreen Bilar of Sun.Star ruled the female 3k race at 21:20. The Freeman’s Divine Ngujo placed second at 21:31 while Emerald Quiapo, also from the The Freeman, came in third at 22:02.

Around a hundred runners from various media outlets in Cebu took part in the footrace that was supervised by Ungo Runners Club and Coco Running.
