THE Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu completed a clean sweep of the elimination round in the Passerelle division as they edged rivals University of the Visayas, 56-54, in the Milo-backed SBP-Passerelle tournament last weekend at the Ateneo de Cebu campus in Canduman, Mandaue City.
It was a thrilling match that went down the wire as Ateneo de Cebu built a 10-point lead in the fourth before UV came roaring back to trim it to one, 54-55. A free-throw by Maynard Uy gave the boys in blue some breathing room as they led by two, 56-54, with just 13 seconds remaining on the clock.
Ateneo de Cebu was able to stop UV’s offensive but failed to corral the looseball which made its way to three-point sniper Jose Zaldy Dizon. Fortunately for Ateneo de Cebu, Dizon’s potential game-winning three rattled in and out, to give the Magis Eagles the win, their sixth in as many tries.
Michael Jordan led Ateneo de Cebu with 10 while Mark Dumandan and Angelo Jabalon combined for 16.
Dizon and Samuel Melicor had 12 apiece for UV which dropped to 5-1.
In other games, Don Bosco put a stop to Southwestern University-Phinma’s winning streak with a 53-52 victory. Don Bosco improved to third place at 4-2 while SWU dropped to an even 3-3.
The University of San Carlos on the other hand, prevailed over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation, 63-54, for their lone win in the tournament.
USPF ended their stint without a single victory in six tries.
