A courier of a cargo forwarding company died after being crushed underneath by an elevator inside a mall at 1:20 pm Monday.

The Cebu City police said Juan Amistad Udto, a 24-year-old resident of barangay Looc, Lapu-Lapu City and a native of Pangan-an Island, was about to load cargo on a push cart when the elevator’s cables snapped.

The elevator hit Udto’s nape and forcibly squeezed the upper half of his body inside the elevator.

Udto’s co-workers immediately looked for a metal pipe they could use to extricate his body, which witnesses said was severely bruised.

He died due to ‘cervical contortion’ according to the attending doctor at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Cebu City. A full autopsy has yet to be conducted on Udto’s remains.
