Mascariñas, IM Yap win in Knight Attack Chess Café tourney

RICO Mascariñas bested Carlos Moreno to clinch the title in the Battle of the Chess Veterans held last Dec. 23 at the Knight Attack Chess Café at the Robinsons Galleria Cebu.

Mascariñas and Moreno both finished the seven-round swiss system format tournament with 6.0 points but the former got 33 tie break points compared to the latter’s 30.5.

Mascariñas, thus, took home the title and the P20,000 purse while Moreno walked away with P15,000.

Franklin Caylan finished third with 5.5 points.

Meanwhile, International Master (IM) Kim Steven Yap dominated the Christmas Blitz Tournament held simultaneously with the Battle of the Chess Veterans at the same venue.

Yap finished with 6.5 points to take home the P7,000 purse. Rommel and Ronald Ganzon finished second and third, respectively.

Vic Glysen Derotas topped the ladies blitz tournament after scoring 4.5 points while Shaira Mae Monsalud finished second and Laila Camel Nadera third.
