Mandaue to regulate use of streets

January 27,2017 - 11:30 PM

THE Mandaue City Council has approved during its first reading last Tuesday an ordinance regulating the use of city’s streets and sidewalks during sports events, festivals and street parties.

The proposed ordinance entitled “Street and Sidewalk Regulation Ordinance for Street Events” requires event organizers to come up with their own public safety and security plan and waste management plan to avoid accidents.

Vice Mayor Carlo Fortuna said that during marathons, drinking bottles were just thrown everywhere, causing inconvenience. “Just like the last triathlon, bottles were left. We have to prepare a waste management plan for that. Organizing an event, you have to be meticulous because it involves too many people,” he said.

Fortuna also emphasized that it is best to come up with a permanent regulation. “Once we have this ordinance, there is now a protocol. It should be regulated because even small instances can affect the overall success of the event,” he added. /USJ-R Intern Vanisa Soriano
