Uber PH, GMR-Megawide ink deal for travelers

WHILE traveling may be synonymous to adventure, it should not compromise safety for both tourists and locals heading to and coming out of the airport.

A partnership between GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corp. (GMCAC), the operator of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport, and Uber Systems Inc., is expected to make it more convenient for passengers to head to their respective destinations.

“This is not just a commercial partnership (with GMCAC), this is partnership with a shared vision in giving passengers more options for transportation and providing them a safe, reliable ride from or to the airport,” said General Manager Laurence Cua of Uber Philippines.

In last Friday’s press briefing, Cua and Louie Ferrer, GMCAC president, and Chief Commercial Advisor Ravishankar Saravu set the official pick-up point of Uber drivers at the airport’s domestic arrivals.

Ferrer said their partnership with Uber Philippines will help give customers the complete travel experience starting at the airport to wherever they’re headed to.

“We share the same vision of delivering excellent services to our customers, to make it more convenient for them,” he said. Ferrer said he frequently uses Uber when in Cebu despite having his own car.

Ferrer said the arrangement will mean reducing the volume of passenger arrivals every hour by providing them an option for more comfortable rides.

The Uber transport network services mobile application or app debuted in the market seven years ago.

“To date, people are rethinking of buying a car. Why buy one when you can just download an app and click on the button, without thinking about maintenance, driving and parking and all these things?” Cua said.

Cua said the eventual arrival of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and the existing MyBus units of SM Cebu bodes well for the commuter.

“For us, we don’t see it as a problem but as an opportunity. At the end of the day, we are all focused on our customers. It’s all about giving them a choice and it makes us work harder knowing that people have other choices. But in the end, the customer wins,” he said.
