Cold weather to persist; Mandaue mayor stranded in Camotes
Metro Cebu Cebu will have cold weather until the end of January as temperatures continue to drop as low as 23 degrees Celsius at night.
The state weather agency Pagasa said Cebu’s warmest temperature will be 28 degrees today until tomorrow. The online service Accuweather has the same forecast and predicts temperature highs at 29-degrees today, tomorrow and Thursday this week.
Northeasterly winds from China and Siberia, part of the the Amihan monsoon, delayed the return trip of Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes and other Mandaue City officials from Camotes islands in northeast Cebu.
Rough waves forced the Jomalia Shipping Corp. to cancel its afternoon ferry trip from San Francisco town in Camotes to the port of Danao city.
The mayor and his team spent the night in San Francisco after handing out almost P1 million as disaster aid to towns of Pilar, Poro and San Francisco in Camotes.
DANGER
On Friday, Pagasa said Metro Cebu’s temperature will reach 30 degrees while Accuweather predicted 29 degrees.
Both sites also said Metro Cebu’s lowest temperature would still be 23 degrees.
Instead of passing through a longer route to the Pacific Ocean, the northeasterly winds from China and Siberia went straight to the Philippines.
Accuweather also showed that Cebu experienced temperature highs of 33 degrees from Jan. 28-31 last year.
While it was sunny yesterday, the big waves posed danger to sea travel.
“Although we did not bring a change of clothes, we stayed overnight. It’s better to be safe,” Cortes said.
Cortes and the other city officials left Danao City port for Camotes yesterday morning to turn over financial assistance to the island towns hit by supertyphoon Yolanda.
The weather was fine in the morning, and the group even went to the remote island town of Pilar which received P350,000 in assistance from Mandaue City Hall.
ASSISTANCE
Cortes’ team later went to Tudela town where they turned over a P300,000 check to Tudela Mayor Erwin Yu, Vice Mayor Jojo Solante and municipal councilors.
Poro town also received a check worth P300,000 that was accepted by Mayor Luciano Rama, Vice Mayor Edgar Rama and the municipal council.
The group’s last stop was San Francisco town where they turned over a P400,000 check to Mayor Ely Arquillano and the municipal council.
Mandaue City officials earlier distributed financial aid to northern Cebu towns and the three-town Bantayan island.
They also plan to extend assistance to Samar and Leyte provinces.
