The House of Representatives agreed on Monday to postpone the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.

Celestino Martinez III, president of the Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) – Cebu Federation, welcomed the order, and said that the postponement may serve as a second chance for barangay officials to clear their ranks of narco-politicians.

Martinez also urged barangay officials to clear their villages from illegal drugs.

Martinez noted that the efforts of cleansing the ranks in the barangay level should not only come from law enforcement agencies, but from the barangay officials themselves.

“This is an opportunity to do your job. We should always act upon on what our constituents want, especially given the extension,” Martinez said.

The synchronized barangay and SK elections were supposed to be held in October 2017.

The Congress decided to move it to May next year.
