REST is over for renowned Cebuana marathoner Mary Joy Tabal.

After a short break from her gold-medal performance in women’s marathon in the recent Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games), the 28-year-old Tabal is starting to condition herself for another round of tough training in preparation for her coming races, starting with her title defense in the National Milo Marathon this December.

Tabal told Cebu Daily News she started her training earlier this week, initially focusing on strength and conditioning as she gets ready for a more difficult program back in Tuscany, Italy in October.

It was in Italy where she spent most of her training in preparation for her SEA Games stint.

“Part of my transition training is to have strength and conditioning exercises. This involves gym workouts, core exercises and leg strengthening exercises,” Tabal said. “We recently added running and short sprints. [I’m] slowly getting [my] pacing back.”

After the Milo Marathon, Tabal’s next big race is the 2018 Asian Games, which will be held in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia. She is next targeting a return trip to the Olympics in 2020 in Tokyo.

Tabal became the first Filipina to compete in women’s marathon of the Olympics last 2016 in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

Aside from Italy, Tabal’s corporate backer Motor Ace Philippines is also planning to send her to Kenya and Uganda for another set of training.
