LAWRENCE Dave Candia from the Cebu City National Science High School (CCNSHS) was crowned champion in the professional category of the 4th Roger T. Abella Memorial Open Scrabble Tournament at the Robinsons Galleria Cebu last Saturday.

Candia narrowly escaped Jowar Ayuno in total spreads, 493-489, to emerge champion. Both actually had identical 6-1 (win-loss) slates.

Dart Eslao, last year’s runner-up, wound up third with a 5-2 record. He had the highest single game with 567 points and the highest single turn with the word “stingies” worth 127 points.

Meanwhile, Jessa Manigos of CCNSHS beat University of San Jose–Recoletos’ (USJ-R) Mexl Delver Tuba to rule the high school category.

Jay Kenneth Llemit of Ramon Duterte Memorial National High School (RDMNHS) had the highest single turn with the word “stinger” worth 140 points. USJ-R’s Kate Aslie Montes had the highest single game with 631 points.
