Mandaue City officials and business executives joined nearly 2,000 participants in the “Hope for Butuanon River Run” yesterday morning.

The fun run comprised of both 3K and 6K categories initiated by Mandaue City Hall’s City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) to raise public awareness and involvement in rehabilitating and protecting the Butuanon River.

The fun run was held a year ahead of the International River Summit with 2018 being the Butuanon River Year and November set aside as Butuanon River Month.

Mandaue City Mayor Gabriel “Luigi” Quisumbing said they are targeting to rehabilitate the 10-kilometer Butuanon River traversing the city through nine barangays up to the river’s mouth at Mactan channel.

The pilot area for the river rehabilitation starts a kilometer from the Butuanon Bridge at Pacific mall in Barangay Ibabao-Estancia up to Cambogaong Bridge in Barangay Paknaan.

CENRO through Arch. Araceli Barlam started a dialogue with 62 identified companies and establishments in Mandaue City that were discharging waste water to the Butuanon River to find ways to eliminate it based on a city ordinance to rehabilitate the Butuanon River.

“The dialogue is also done in coordination with Cebu City stakeholders along the Butuanon river because there’s also an 11-kilometer stretch of it in their area,” Barlam said.

Runners wore neon green singlets as they passed through the portion of the Butuanon River secured by police and traffic enforcers.

Cash prizes worth P3,000 and P5,000 were given to the winners of the 3K and 6K categories respectively.

A zumba session was also held after the run. The Junior Chamber International (JCI) Mandaue and the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) Cebu

Chapter gave free congee and mineral water to the runners.
