USJ-R dominates A3A collegiate hoopwars in Tagum

The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars are coming home champions after they beat Jose Maria College, 101-91, to grab the title in the A3A Cup Unity Games Inter-Collegiate Basketball Tournament at the Rotary Gym in Tagum City, Davao del Norte.

The win in the finals capped off an undefeated run by the Jaguars of head coach Jun Noel and assistant Bong Pineda.

USJ-R swept the elimination round and headed straight to the finals with a 5-0 (win-loss) record.

The Jaguars bagged a whopping P100,000 cash prize for the victory.

Additionally, three Jaguars players went home with some additional hardware.

Wingman Miguel Gastador was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) and was also joined on the Mythical Five team by his teammates, the reigning Cesafi MVP Jaybie Mantilla and rookie big man JJ Calang.

The tournament was made possible through the backing of House Speaker Pantaleon “Bebot” Alvarez, Davao del Norte Governor Anthony “AGR” del Rosario, Vice Governor Allan Dujali and Tagum City Mayor Allan L. Rellon. It was conducted in conjunction with the celebration of Tagum City’s Parochial Fiesta.
