CEBUANO game developers will have something to look forward to after the Sinulog celebration next week.
This as the Global Game Jam 2018 will be held in Cebu on Jan. 26 to 28 at the fourth floor of the Company Building, JDN Square along P. Remedio Street in Banilad, Mandaue City.
Global Game Jam is an annual event where game developers gather to mingle and collaborate with other game developers. For the first time, the Red Trident Games will host the Game Jam 2018.
The Global Game Jam started in 2009 and became the hackathon for game developers. From 23 countries that participated that year, the event grew and now has 90 countries participating over the course of eight years.
According to Clint Hennesy Cagang, Founder and Red Trident Games, the event connects gamers to come together, be creative and share experiences through video games.
During the event, the participants will form a team and collaborate and come up with a game within three days, based on the theme given during the event. Games can either be platformed for mobile device, personal computers (PC), or even board games. There are no limits, said Cagang.
Passion for gaming
While smartphone provided a convenient and alternative program for game developers, Cagang said the gaming industry in Cebu has not been given the right attention it needs.
Cagang said there are a lot of Cebuanos who are into game development.
“The common misconception is that when someone wants to be a game developer, he or she has to go to Manila because training and courses are provided there,” said Cagang.
But Cagang said one doesn’t need to go to Manila to be a game developer.
“Everything is on google now, all you need to do is research practice and be passionate about it,” he said.
Through the Global Game Jam, Cagang hopes that they can encourage more game developers to take part in these types of activities and inspire more hobbyists to create more games.
About 60 participants have already registered for the event. Registration is still ongoing until January 21.
