THE PHILIPPINE entertainment industry has lost another gem after veteran film and TV director Maryo J. Delos Reyes passed away Saturday night.
His brother, Manny delos Reyes, confirmed his death through a Facebook post yesterday.
“To all our relatives and friends it is with great shock, disbelief, pain and extreme sadness to inform you that my brother Direk Maryo J. Delos Reyes has recently passed away. The entire Delos Reyes and Jorolan families are mourning his loss and request all to say a prayer and especially the media to be respectful of our current grief and sorrow at this time,” he said.
The veteran director died after he reportedly suffered a heart attack Saturday night in Dipolog City. He was 65 years old.
Director Joey Javier Reyes said he remembered Delos Reyes for his infectious laughter and love for life.
“His greatest film is the collection of memories he left to inspire us about embracing each day with excitement & gratitude. Goodbye, dear friend,” Reyes said on his Twitter account.
“100 Tula Para Kay Stella” director Jason Paul Laxamana recalled that he was with Delos Reyes last Monday.
Laxamana said, “Bakit ganu’n? Bigla kang lumisan. May gagawin pa tayong project di ba?”
The late director is known for his films like “The Unmarried Wife,” “A Love Story,” “Bagets,” “My Other Woman,” and “Magnifico,” which won the Crystal Bear for the 2004 Berlin International Film Festival Children’s Category.
Last September 2017, Delos Reyes was in Cebu City to promote the first Bisaya online video series, “Kailan Darating Ang Ayoko Na?” headlined by Orlando Sol, Catherine Rem, and Blumark Roces.
During the visit, the late director recognized his roots from Bohol.
Kapuso star Ruru Madrid also shared a photo of him with the late director.
“Ikaw ang dahilan kung bakit ako nandito sa kung nasaan ako ngayon kung anong meron ako ngayon ikaw ang dahilan nun,” part of Madrid’s Instagram post read.
The Kapuso actor considered Delos Reyes as his mentor in the entertainment industry who believed in his talent.
He also recalled that he met Delos Reyes at the airport last Saturday when Madrid was bound for Iloilo City for a mall show.
“Kung alam ko lang na yun na ang huling yakap mo sakin sana mas tinagalan at mas hinigpitan ko pa po. Kaya maraming maraming salamat po sa inyo Direk ikaw ang maituturing kong pangalawang ama kaya napakasakit talaga na maiwan mo bilang anak,” Madrid said.
Singer-songwriter Ogie Alcasid shared a photo of the late director on his Instagram account.
“Like so many of our actors and artists here in our country, I learned so much from him. He is a gem and treasure in our industry. Rest now with Jesus Direk and thank you for the memories,” Alcasid said.
Delos Reyes was Alcasid’s teacher in TV Performance at the University of the Philippines and a former colleague at the Mass Communication Alumni Association.
