Incumbent Ronda town mayor Mariano Blanco III was shocked when he heard about the news that his vice-mayor, lawyer Jonah John Ungab, was ambushed by two unknown assailants on Monday noon.

Ungab, who remained unconscious as of press time, sustained a gunshot wound on his head. He was immediately rushed to the Chong Hua Hospital in Mandaue City.

Blanco, who also happens to be Ungab’s uncle, said that the lawyer has a clean record during 15-year in public service.

“In terms of public service, he was a good vice mayor,” Blanco added.

Before winning the vice mayoral post of Ronda town, southwestern Cebu in 2010, Ungab entered into politics as councilor.

Ungab, who is serving his last term as vice mayor of Ronda, is the lawyer of suspected drug lord Kerwin Espinosa.

The lawyer was with his wife, Pearl Ungab, at the time of the ambush along S. Osmeña Street, North Reclamation Area in Cebu City past 11 a.m.

SPO1 Winston Ybanez of the city police homicide section said that Ungab accompanied Espinosa at the Qimonda IT Center, Cebu City’s courthouse.
