An estimated five thousand bicycle riders and hundreds of people flocked to Plaza Independencia to celebrate Earth Hour 2018 at past 8 pm Saturday, March 24.

The event organized by Cebu City Hall, Habagat, and non-profit organizations Eco-Tabang and Five Pieces Daily Habit held various activities like the Basura (garbage) run which had participants collect trash from the streets.

At 8:30 p.m., the lights were turned off at Plaza Independencia for one hour in keeping with the Earth Hour practice to raise awareness on saving energy to reduce carbon emissions.

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña and Nida Cabrera, chief of the Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) led the ceremonial turning off and candle lighting event of Earth Hour 2018.

Bicyclists passed through the nearby streets of Legaspi, M.J. Cuenco, and S. Osmeña Boulevard to promote their advocacy for shared bike lanes in Cebu City.
