Ormoc City, Leyte— Lhaly Laviste,  38, has something to look forward to after her  home was destroyed by supertyphoon Yolanda nearly three months ago.

“My husband [Orlando] used to land paint jobs  but after Yolanda, we have to rely solely on my laundry job to get by,” said Laviste, a mother of three.

Laviste, who earns P300 a week and is living with her family in a nipa hut, is one of 100 family beneficiaries of a joint housing and livelihood project by telecommunications giant Globe

Telecom and Gawad Kalinga in barangay Tambulilid.

Globe Tattoo donated P16.2 million to build 100  houses and provide livelihood to the community as it recovers from the devastation caused by supertyphoon Yolanda last Nov. 8.

GK executive director Jose Luis M. Oquiñena said the houses will cost P125,000 each and will measure 21 square meters plus a loft space of 10 to 12 square meters.

SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY

“It’s enough for a family of five. Most of them were  living  onsite before the typhoon,” he said.

Oquiñena said most of the residents were also victims of the 1991 Ormoc flash flood which claimed thousands of lives.

“This is a relocation area donated by the Rotary Club of Ormoc for them and when Yolanda came, they lost their homes. Now our aim is to build a sustainable community which we will call Globe-Rotary-GK Village,” he said.

Globe Telecom president and CEO Ernest Cu said this is the first community Globe  helped build in partnership with GK for the Yolanda victims.

LIVELIHOOD

“The P10 million will be used to build the houses while the P5 million will be used to develop a livelihood program. We also have raised an additional P1.2 million for the community,” said Cu.

REBUILDING

For livelihood, Oquiñena said GK  started providing training on masonry for residents like hollow block making which is sold at P9.50 per piece.

Oquiñena said they also plan to tap social enterprise Human Heart Nature for more livelihood programs in the community.

The company produces and sells organic  toiletries and personal care products.
