SEWAGE WOES

Netizens gave mixed reactions over reports that the fecal coliform levels in the waters of Mactan Island and Panglao Island in Bohol province exceeded safety standards.

A netizen named Joe Leighty wrote, “I think Cebu needs to build wastewater treatment plants. If not could lose tourism. Such a shame so many beautiful beaches.”

Peter commented, “There is NO effective sewer system in Cebu City — we have open sewers in Lahug carrying semi (very) treated sewage to the nearest already polluted stream — Cebu City needs to get honest, knowledgeable building inspectors and stop accepting medieval
standards — but this will never happen.”

While alisto101 said, “Most of the dwellers along the lakeshore and coastal areas are not using toilet or the correct and standard septic tank..their waste goes directly to the environment. Sanitary problem is getting worse. The DILG should issue a memo directing the LGU to strictly implement the law on sewage disposal.
