The first thing that was wrong was the characteristic and upgraded lack of restraint on the part of the President.
There was absolutely no need for him to turn his visit to South Korea into a circus, complete with soliciting a kiss from an adoring Filipina.
That highlighted yet again President Rodrigo “Digong” Duterte’s demeaning, hedonistic, utilitarian view of women.
For him, women are unfit to hold leadership positions like that of Supreme Court Chief Justice.
But they can be plucked out of a crowd to satisfy his thirst to provide them with a salacious show.
For him, they are barred from airing alternative opinions that criticize his ways.
But they may, like Margaux Uson maximize freedom of expression to defend his kiss collection even if such an exercise should blacken the memory of the dead.
Here we have a conflict between freedom of expression, in which Uson alleged that kisses showered on the late Senator Benigno Simeon “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. by women just moments before he deplaned and was assassinated were malicious and penal laws provision against desecrating remembrance of the deceased.
Uson should have left the dead alone instead of using him in a social media post that only highlighted her condescension: She believes all people will think Ninoy enduring kisses before he was killed is ribald as Digong claiming one for a spectacle.
As followers of Ninoy’s daughter, Kristina Bernadette have shown, not all Filipinos are fools.
