More than 600 afflicted by mental illness in Cebu

Psychosis topped the list of mental health disorders of the Provincial Health Office (PHO).

Based on data obtained by Cebu Dail News, 679 persons in Cebu province were afflicted by psychosis from 2015 to 2017, followed by schizophrenia and developmental disorders.

PHO chief Dr. Rene Catan said some of those with mental illnesses were confined in their houses, while others are kept on a leash and treated like animals.
Dr. Catan said those suffering from mental illness need immediate medical treatment. Pres. Rodrigo Duterte signed Mental Health Law which ensures the care of persons suffering from mental illness.

Catan said they hope the law will strengthen the PHO’s program for mental illness.
