UV, USPF start second round strong

The University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers and the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers chalked up victories at the start of the second round of the 2018 Cesafi men’s basketball tournament on Thursday night at the Cebu Coliseum.

USPF leaned on a strong finishing kick to defeat the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats, 87-79, in the first game while the Green Lancers dominated the second half to put away the Southwestern University (SWU) – Phinma Cobras, 70-51.

The Panthers were led by RR Cauba, who continued his breakout season, with 23 points, eight rebounds, four assists and a block.

Rookie Kenny Rogers Rocacurva scored 20, Kevin Oleodo added 14, Clark Con-Ui and Jessie Aloro pitched in 11 each and Jemcerson Sable notched 10 for CIT-U.

USPF improved to 5-2 (win-loss) while CIT-U remained winless in seven outings.

UV’s win boosted its record to 4-3 while SWU-Phinma lost its sixth straight to fall near the bottom at 1-6.

Rey Suerte topscored for the Green Lancers with 26 points to go with four rebounds and four assists. Helping him out was burly forward Jancork Cabahug who had 12 points and seven rebounds.

Shaquille Imperial led the Cobras with 14 points while Red Cachuela added 13.
