MORALE BOOSTER: Win over UV a huge impact on UC’s chances in Cesafi men’s football
The University of Cebu’s (UC) 2-1 win over the University of the Visayas (UV) on Sunday at the Cebu City Sports Center gave the Webmasters a glimpse of hope in the 2018 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (Cesafi) collegiate football competition.
The victory was UC’s first in six tries, and it couldn’t have come at the more perfect time.
“I had told [the team] that if we don’t win this game now, then there would be a big chance that we wouldn’t be able to come back anymore,” said UC head coach Jun Taneo, whose squad moved out of last place with a 1-3-2 (win-loss-draw) record. “The whole team is very happy.”
According to Taneo, if they lost to UV, the team would have had a really difficult time catching up with just two games left to play.
“That win was a big boost for us. [We have to win our last two games] if we are to have a chance of advancing to the semifinal round,” said Taneo.
UC’s remaining games are against the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) and the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R).
USPF dropped to last place after losing to USJ-R, 0-1, in an earlier match on Sunday. The Panthers tote a 0-1-3 record.
UV remains at second place with seven points off a 2-2-1 record while USJ-R tightened its grip on the third spot also with seven points. Despite having the same standings with UV, the Green Booters took the second spot owing to its goal difference of six points. USJ-R has a -2.
Scoring for UC in the game against UV were Gabriel Lim and Edward Acabo.
Meanwhile, a skirmish happened in the dying minutes of the UC vs UV match which earned Lim a yellow card for buying into an incident which he wasn’t involved in.
