Roofs were blown and a sports complex was damaged when a tornado hit sitio Nava, Viking in barangay Mambaling, Cebu City, at 2 p.m., Tuesday.

The tornado which was clocked at 200 kilometers per hour also hit barangays Tisa in Cebu City and San Roque in Talisay City. No damage was reported in these areas. However in sitio Nava, Viking, there were at least 29 houses that were damaged.

Weather analyst Alfredo Quiblat of the state weather bureau Pagasa said they spotted a thunderstorm cloud at 1:45 p.m. today. Pagasa previously warned residents of thunderstorm clouds brought by tropical depression Domeng.

A witness from Tisa Labangon said he saw dust flying around in circles at the time the tornado hit. “Daghan abog. Nagtuyok-tuyok sa taas (So much dust swirling around in the air),” he said.

The unnamed witness said he and his friends first noticed the tornado when the kites flew around in circles in one direction.

A dyAB radio reporter said the tornado may have started in Labangon, Tisa and went straight to Duljo, Fatima before making its way to Mambaling where 29 houses were reportedly destroyed.

The tornado stopped in Talisay City where it didn’t inflict any damage. Pagasa’s Mactan chief Oscar Tabada said the tornado was a case of “unstable pressure,” since its direction rose and went down repeatedly.
