Day 1 of waste segregation campaign nets 33 violators
The city government of Cebu has gone very strict in implementing the waste segregation law that even City Hall garbage truck drivers and loaders who collect unsegregated waste have been issued citation tickets.
According to Grace Luardo, head of the Cebu City Environmental Sanitation and Enforcement Team (Ceset), 33 households from barangays San Roque, Tisa, Quiot, Calamba and T. Padilla have been given the citation ticket for violating the city ordinance on waste segregation today – the first day of the strict implementation.
She added that aside from Ceset personnel Barangay Environment Officers (BEOs) have been authorized to issue citation tickets to violators of the segregation ordinance in their respective barangays.
Some truck drivers complained yesterday on their apprehension by some Ceset teams waiting in dump sites.
“Unfair man na. Adto sila dapat manakop sa mga panimalay sa syudad. Trabaho ra ning amo. Alang alang mag pasagdan ra namo ang mga basura sa kadalanan?” 50 year old truck driver Feliz Aballe told Cebu Daily News.
(It’s not fair. They should apprehend the households in the city. We are just doing our job. We can’t just leave the garbage on the streets)
Aballe had been working in the Department of Public Services (DPS) for almost 25 years and it was only his first time being issued the citation last Sunday evening.
Based on the citation ticket, Aballe should pay a settlement fee of P500 to the city within seven days or else a case will be filed against them for violating Republic Act 9003 and City Ordinance 2031.
