CEBU CITY– Opposition slate, Partido Barug-PDP Laban, appeared ready to put up a good fight against the party of incumbent Mayor Tomas Osmeña as they staged two simultaneous proclamation rallies on Friday night, March 29, 2019.

The rallies were held in Barangay Mabolo for the North District and Barangay Basak San Nicolas for the South District.

The rallies culminated the day-long activities of the party to kick-off the local campaign period.

Vice Mayor Edgardo Labella, who is running for mayor and the standard bearer of Partido Barug-PDP Laban, said the two events provided a low cost but “district-centered” approach to their campaign.

“Gibuwag namo aron wala kayo mi gasto. Walay gitawag nga hakot-hakot kay ang mga taga Norte moadto raman sa Mabolo ug ang taga South moadto ras Basak San Nicolas,” said Labella.

(We separated the events so that we will not spend a lot of money. We did not have to bring the people to the venues because the northern residents can easily go to Mabolo while the southern residents can go to Basak San Nicolas.)

Labella said they are overwhelmed by the crowd of people, who showed up to express their support to the party.

He said the people attended the proclamation rallies on their own.

In both rallies, no buses or other forms of mass transportation were parked outside the Barangay Mabolo gym and the Rama Compound in Barangay Basak San Nicolas.

“Makita nimo pag-uli sa mga tawo, ginabitbit nila ilang mga banners. Naglakaw ra sila pauli. Kini sila nianhi ra gyud ni sila by word of mouth,” he said.

(You can see that these people carried their banners on the way home. [They knew about the rallies] from word of mouth.)

North District congressional candidate and celebrity Richard Yap led the sortie in the Barangay Mabolo gym along with the candidates for councilors including incumbent Mabolo barangay chief Niña Mabatid, Pastor Alcover, Jr., Rey Lauron, Ernesto Herrera II, Raymond Garcia, Joel Garganera, Ramil Ayuman, and Noel Wenceslao.

On the other hand, South District congressional candidate Jocelyn Pesquera lead the proclamation rally at Barangay Basak San Nicolas at the Rama compound together with the candidates for councilors Gerald Carillo
Phillip Zafra, Eduardo Rama, Jr., Renato Osmeña Jr., Donaldo Hontiveros, Francis Esparis, Antonio Cuenco, and Erick Espina.

Labella and his running mate for Vice Mayor, former Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, started the sortie in Barangay Mabolo and then moved to Barangay Basak San Nicolas.

Labella said they will not have major campaign events for the rest of the election session until their grand Meeting de Avance on May 11, two days before the May 13 elections.

“From this point on, we will just work hard to show the people that we will do what we promise,” said Labella.

Meanwhile, the Bando Osmeña-Pundok Kauswagan (BO-PK), the party of incumbent Mayor and reelectionist Tomas Osmeña, will be holding its own proclamation rally at the Cebu City Sports Center at 4 p.m., Saturday, March 30, 2019. / celr
