TRAFFIC mess: Rama wants Banawa road project halted

By: Doris C. Bongcac April 04,2014 - 05:51 AM

CEBU City Mayor Michael Rama said he wants to stop the ongoing road rehabilitation near a department store in Banawa.

Rama said he could not understand why the concrete road was peeled off only to be paved again with fresh concrete.

But since it’s a national road project, all he can do is request the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to pull back.

On Wednesday, City Councilor Gerardo Carillo, in a privilege speech, deplored the alleged waste of public funds and resulting traffic jams caused by various road improvement projects of the DPWH that were not coordinated with the city government to respond to actual needs.

He said the city government had requested for road widening to ease traffic, but instead projects for concreting and re-asphalting were approved.

The Council decided to invite the DPWH to an executive session on April 14. They will invite former DPWH city district engineer Nicomedes Leonor and the current city district engineer Fernando Cruz.
