The man who attempted to shoot  Lapu-Lapu City Councilor Leo Mercado  in a cockpit died yesterday in the emergency room after  being shot  by a responding policeman.

Patrocinio Baring, 67, of barangay Gun-ob, Lapu-Lapu City was shot in the right leg and right hip.

He was already weak from loss of blood when he was taken to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center after being first treated at the  Lapu-Lapu City Hospital, said PO3 Lydo Pinos of the homicide section quoting the attending physician.

Councilor Mercado was confronted on his way to  the restroom of the Mahayahay cockpit in the afternoon of  Black Saturday by the gunman, who blocked his way and asked about the whereabouts of a land title.

Baring had just been released from jail before last Saturday’s  shooting.

Baring and Councilor Mercado used to be friends.

Baring had worked before at Lapu-Lapu City Hall through the help of Mercado.

He was later involved in a homicide case and was detained at  the New Bilibid Prison.

SPO4 Edgar Sagarino, who responded to Saturday’s shooting, chased Baring as he fled and shot him when he refused to surrender.

Baring earlier pulled out a  9mm pistol and shot the city councilor.

When the gun misfired twice, Baring struck the councilor  with it.

Mercado’s aides noticed the commotion but Baring pointed the gun at them while looking for a way to escape from the cockpit.

SPO4  Sagarino who was in the vicinity was called by Vic Radaza,  owner of the cockpit.

The policeman  spotted Baring  aiming the gun at the crowd.

He asked Baring to surrender, but Baring ignored him.  The policeman shot Baring in the thigh.

When the suspect ran, another shot was fired, hitting his right hip and causing him to fall to the ground.
