The sea animal may have been hit by a hard object or boat propeller blades based on its injury, said Fred Menguito, information officer of Lapu-Lapu city.
“The wound may have been caused by a sharp object according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources. The dolphin got separated from its group, and was weakened after bleeding from its wounds,” said Adelino Padilla of the city’s environment office.
Workers of Vistamar Hotel spotted the dolphin floating in the sea about 7 a.m. then found it beached on the shore by 3 p.m.
Padilla said dolphins can be found at the Hilutungan Channel and Caubian Island, so boatmen are advised to be extra careful not to hit the creatures with their boat propellers.
The dolphin was already starting to decompose and part of the skin was peeling so an autopsy was no longer made, said Padilla. /Report by Kent A. Ugalde, Xavier University Intern
