CEBU CITY, Philippines — Aside from overseeing the rehabilitation of Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs), the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Central Visayas (BJMP-7) has also started a donation drive that will benefit public schools in the region.

Jail Superintendent Mary Jane Inopia, chief of the Community Relation Section of BJMP-7, said that the donation drive among their personnel is their means of reaching out to the community, especially the poor students who were badly hit by the pandemic.

“This year, tungod sa nahitabo nga pandemya, naa man mga limitations. Pero naisip namo nga dili namo hunongon among advocacy. So nangita mi og laing way to extend amoang assistance sa schools so mao ni naka come up mi og why not mo donate mi og mga bond papers and other school supplies nga kaya namo,” said Inopia.

(Because of the pandemic this year, we all have our limitations.  That is why we thought of continuing our advocacies. We will find means to extend assistance to the schools that is why we decided to make a donation of bond papers and other school supplies.)

Inopia said that the donation drive which they named “Modyul mo, Sagot ng BJMP” started last August 15 and involves the 40 BJMP-7 facilities in the region.

They conceptualized the “Modyul mo, Sagot ng BJMP” taking the idea from the “Brigada Eskwela” which they participated in the past years.

“Mao ni ang isa sa amoang social responsibility sa community nga mo extend pud mi in one way or any form of assistance in terms of logistical or manpower resources,” said Inopia.

(This is how we show our social responsibility to the community by extending, in one way or another, any form of assistance in terms of logistical or manpower resources.)

When they launched the program last week, Inopia said they only asked for the donation of bond papers from their personnel, but some of their offices went beyond what was expected of its personnel.  There were BJMP-7 offices that also donated other school materials including printers.

BJMP personnel in Bohol province, for example, made a donation of bond papers and a printer to the Cabawan Elementary School in Tagbilaran City.

Their donation program, Inopia said, is not much but this is expected to help alleviate the condition of pupils in public schools in the region. / dcb
