Capitol help sought for Ban-Tal traffic scheme
Since it owns several properties along Governor Cuenco Avenue in Cebu City, the Cebu provincial government has a crucial role in improving the traffic flow along the Banilad-Talamban corridor, Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said.
Rama said he already spoke to Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III about implementing a set back of existing structures that now occupy province-owned lots to make more space available for vehicle use.
“If they intend to use their properties for commercial intention (in the future), we might as well make the adjustments now. Why wait when the time (to use their properties commercially) will come?,” he said.
Rama said follow-ups are needed to further discuss details on how the province could help the city, Rama said.
The province owns the property occupied by the Philippine Medical Society and the property proposed for use in the Cuidad development project along Governor Cuenco Avenue.
Rama said he also spoke to other property owners in the area and some of them signified their interest to allow a set back of their properties without expecting compensation from the government.
Rama enforced a traffic experiment along the Banilad-Talamban corridor on June 30 in hopes of addressing the traffic congestion in the area.
Specific left turn slots were identified to regulate the flow of vehicles making a left turn and prevent them from obstructing the flow of vehicles headed to the north.
Rama said he visited the Ban-Tal area at 10 am yesterday and said the congestion which the traffic experimentation scheme caused has improved, after a week since its implementation.
Rama claimed that the area was no longer as congested as it was last week even if there were no traffic enforcers present during his visit. “It’s all about discipline, consideration,” the mayor said.
