LPA may traverse Mindanao, southern Visayas — Pagasa

MANILA, Philippines — The low pressure area (LPA) east southeast of Davao City may cross Mindanao or the southern portion of Visayas, bringing rains in its path and onto the Bicol and Mimaropa regions, the state weather bureau said Wednesday.

The LPA, which entered the Philippine area of responsibility on Tuesday afternoon, was last spotted 895 kilometers east southeast of Davao City, based on the weather update issued by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) at 4 a.m.

“Mababa ang tsansa na ito ay maging isang bagyo o tropical depression pero nakikita natin na ito ay nagmomove pawestward at posible na tumama sa may southern portion of Mindanao from Thursday at tatawirin ang natitira pang bahagi ng Mindanao hanggang sa Friday,” Pagasa weather specialist Benison Estareja said.

(The LPA has a low chance of becoming a tropical depression but we see that it is moving westward and may traverse the southern portion of Mindanao from Thursday and the rest of Mindanao until Friday.)

“Mayroon ding scenario from different models na posible na umakyat dito sa may northern portion or Mindanao or particularly Caraga region itong low pressure area at tatawirin ang southern part of Visayas hanggang sa Friday. Nonetheless ano man po ang maging scenario natin, magpapaulan pa rin ito sa malaking bahagi ng Visayas, Mindanao and even Bicol Region and Mimaropa from now hanggang sa Friday,” he added.

(There is also another scenario that it may go upward to the northern portion of Mindanao particularly Caraga and traverse through the southern portion of Visayas until Friday. Nevertheless, the LPA will still bring rains in the large portion of Visayas, Mindanao, and even Bicol Region and Mimaropa from now until Friday.)

Estareja said light to moderate rains and occasionally strong or heavy rains may be expected in the said areas. He warned the landslides or flooding may occur during heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon is affecting the weather in Northern Luzon, according to Pagasa.

For the weather forecast this Wednesday, Pagasa said cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are expected in Mindanao and Eastern Visayas due to the trough or extension of the LPA.

Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon will bring cloudy skies with light rains in Cagayan Valley, and partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains in Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon.

The rest of Visayas will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms, Pagasa said.
