CEBU City councilors want a review of the city’s policy on the acquisition of sports utility vehicles (SUVs).
This is to prevent duplication of purchases and to misdo away with the practice of assigning vehicles to individuals other than their intended users, which may be considered as ground for technical malversation.
General Services Office (GSO) chief Dionisio Gualiza was directed to give the City Council a list of all city government-owned vehicles, including ambulances.
A committee composed of Councilors Eugenio Gabuya, Dave Tumulak and Sisinio Andales was formed yesterday to review the assignment of vehicles.
“Barangays always request for new vehicles . There are better ways of using our resources other than buying vehicles,” said Councilor Margot Osmeña.
Gualiza was asked in yesterday’s session about the request of barangay Pahina San Nicolas for a brand new vehicle. All 80 barangays already have brand new vehicles bought in the 2012 budget, said Osmena.
The city bought 39 Mitsubishi and 29 Toyota pick up trucks and 12 Toyota Innova vans.
Gualiza said all the purchased vehicles were distributed to the barangays while some were assigned to a barangay councilor allied with Mayor Michael Rama and not to the barangay’s chairman.
