“All systems go.” This is what Cebu provincial administrator Mark Tolentino said, referring to all logistical preparations for the Ironman Philippines 70.3 race that will be held tomorrow at the Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa.
The green light was given only after organizers of the race decided to adopt contingency measures, especially for the bike leg, where the unfinished roadwork by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) posed sefety concerns for the participants.
Sunrise Events Inc. project director Princess Galura said they have been in touch with the DPWH since March.
“We always ask the people they send to the provincial meetings. They always say that by middle of July, everything will be done. This is twice or thrice they have mentioned. But napansin namin middle of July parang hindi matatapos ‘to”, she said. “So we said we just have to change the course since it’s too late to change the venue. [We have worked out a bike route] based on the best possible option we could extract from the nice road that is left. Today we just have to tell the participants again to put safety first.”
They will survey the bike route for the last time today to see if they need to provide visual cues or warning signs for the bikers.
“Kung meron pa rin [pot holes], lalagyan na ng cones para i-avoid nila. (If there are still pot holes, we will put cones so that they can avoid them. ) We don’t want to make the front page the following day that many people crashed because of a pot hole,” Galura said.
