CEBU CITY, Philippines — The number 13 proved lucky for Jimmy Ty.

Seeded 13th among 65 competitors, Ty raised the banner of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca) after topping the Executive division of the recent 4th Chooks to Go National Rapid Chess Championships.

The 35-year old Ty, a civil engineer who is based in Tacloban City, ruled the Executive division with 6.0 points, the same output of eventual second placer Arjoe Loanzon after seven rounds of online chess action.

The competition was held from July 9 to 11.

Ty, also a champion of Cepca’s weekly online chess tournament annexed the title over Loanzon with superior tiebreak points.

He beat Cristian Vinn Partosa, Marianito Gequinto Jr., Jer Anthony Palno, Ricky Navalta, FIDE Master (FM) Efren Bagamasbad, and National Master (NM) Jasper Ro on the way to the crown.

His only loss was to Hubert Canto in the second round of the seven-round tournament.

In the girls’ Kiddies division, Cebu’s Maria Kristine Lavandero placed second behind champion Franiel Magpili. Lavandero scored 6.0 points against Magili’s 6.5 total.
