The University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors turned from heartbreak kids to heartbreakers as they leaned on the clutch performance of import Shooster Olago to outlast the reigning champions, University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers, 83-74, in overtime in the Cesafi men’s basketball tournament last night at the Cebu Coliseum.
After getting edged by Southwestern University (SWU) in their first game, 67-69, the Warriors made sure to learn the lessons from their endgame collapse in that game.
Olago typified their sharp learning curve as the 6-foot-7 beanpole scored 11 of his 19 points in overtime and capped off his stellar performance with a thunderous tomahawk slam that sealed USC’s first win in two games.
He also had nine rebound and three steals, all while sporting a bandage on his chin after getting bloodied late in regulation during a looseball scramble.
USC’s other import, Espoir Toyambi, had 15 points and 11 rebounds while Christian Laude rounded out the Warriors’ productive frontcourt showing with 13 markers.
The Lancers got 22 from Leonard Santillan and 11 from John Abad but still fell to 1-2 (win-loss).
In juniors action, the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons smothered Don Bosco, 77-44, while the UV Baby Lancers beat the University of San Jose-Recoletos Baby Jaguars, 77-64.
The USC Baby Warriors also got their second win in a row after defeating the University of Cebu Baby Webmasters, 61-49.
