CEBU Daily News was awarded for its reportage on environment issues during the 888 News Forum’s 8th anniversary at the Marco Polo Plaza yesterday.
Four other individuals and organzations were also recgonized for outstanding work in varius fields.
The “award of distinction” was given to the 16-year-old community paper “in recognition of its remarkable investigative news stories in relation to being a consistent advocate for the protection of the environment and keeping its readers up to date on key issues regarding climate change and global warming that affects our country’s economy and development.”
CDN publisher and acting editor-in-chief Eileen Mangubat, who received the trophy, said the paper’s “inherent respect for the environment” was shared by its staff.
“We look at this as more than just stories. We would also like to confirm and repeat our commitment to stories that call attention to respect for the environment and protetction of our home and habitat,” she said during her acceptance speech.
Individual awardees were Armi Lopez Garcia, consul for the Russian Federation and chairperson of the Cebu Consular Corps and Gordon Alan Joseph, president of the Cebu Business Club.

Garcia was cited for facilitating sisterhood agreements between Cebu province and the Vladimir Region of Russia while Joseph was credited for mobilizing a coalition of 14 major business organizations to identify and lobby for infrastructure, development requirements and opportunities.
Visayan Electric Co. (Veco) and Marco Polo Plaza Hotel were also awarded.
Veco represented by Theresa Sederiosa was recognized for reducing power outages in Metro Cebu by buying power generated by business establishments when supply is low against demand and for promoting solar energy, a clean renewable energy.
Marco Polo Plaza hosts the the 888 News Forum every Tuesday.
In its early years, hosting of the 888 News Forum was rotated among Cebu’s big hotels starting from Parklane and Marco Polo in 2007, Waterfront Hotel-Lahug in 2008.
Starting 2009, Marco Polo called back the News Forum and offered to be the permanent venue.
AT present Elias O. Baquero serves as overall coordinator, arranging guests and resource speakers for the weekly forum.
Baquero said the forum was estabished by a core group that included travel agency owner Jenny Franco, CDN columnist Malou Guanzon-Apalisok, and Ricky Poca of the University of San Carlos who formed the 888 Board of Trustees which is chaired by Consul General Bobby Lim Joseph with other members who later joined Honey Loop of the Philippine Star and Freeman, Dawnie Roa who was then Department of Tourism 7 director and hotelier Reye Fuentes, Bobit Avila among others.
